About Gurgen Simonyan

Scientist, public and political figure

Simonyan was born on May 30, 1985, in Yerevan, in a family of doctor. He received his secondary education at Yerevan Basic School № 77 Named After Ruben Miroyan. From 2001-2006, he studied at the Faculty of Construction Technologies of the State University of Architecture and Construction of Yerevan, specializing in ‘Economics and Management of Enterprises’, obtaining the qualification of engineer-economist.

Simonyan was born on May 30, 1985, in Yerevan, in a family of doctor. He received his secondary education at Yerevan Basic School № 77 Named After Ruben Miroyan. From 2001-2006, he studied at the Faculty of Construction Technologies of the State University of Architecture and Construction of Yerevan, specializing in ‘Economics and Management of Enterprises’, obtaining the qualification of engineer-economist.

From 2006-2008, he served in the Armenian army.

From 2008-2010, he studied at the Department of Political Science (Political Management and Political Analysis) of the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia, obtaining a master’s degree. From 2011-2014, as a postgraduate student at the same academy, he conducted scientific research on the topic “Problems of modernization of national interests of the Republic of Armenia”. In 2014, he defended his dissertation, obtaining the degree of PhD in Political Sciences.

From 2015-2024, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology, and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

From 2019-2021, he worked as a research analyst at the Center for Military Strategic Studies of the National Defense Research University of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. At the same university, he was involved in the departmental academic retraining courses “Military Security of the State” as a student and lecturer, participating in the strategic game format command-staff exercises of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia.

In addition to his professional activities, Simonyan taught at the Command Base Faculty of the Military University named after Vazgen Sargsyan (2016-2018), the Yerevan Branch of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (2016-2018), the Gyumri State Pedagogical Institute (2016-2017), Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia (2018-2019), and Yerevan Gladzor University (2022-2024). Since 2015, he has been teaching at International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Republic of Armenia and at the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences of the Armenian-Russian University, and since 2022 also at the “Mkhitar Sebastatsi” Educational Complex.

In 2019-2020, he was elected as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Integration affairs of the Committee on Religion, Diaspora and International Integration Affairs of the Public Council of Armenia.

During the 44-day War in 2020 (September 27 – December 14), as the commander of an engineer platoon of the N military unit of the Armenian Armed Forces, he participated in combat operations (October 6-19, 2020).

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Armenian Army, he was awarded the “Nelson Stepanyan” medal of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia.

He is the author of more than two dozen scientific articles.
