Gurgen Simonyan (arm․ Գուրգեն Սիմոնյան, 30 may 1985, Yerevan) – Armenian public and political figure, scientist.

Biography

Simonyan was born on May 30, 1985 in Yerevan, in the family of a doctor.

Education

Simonyan received his secondary education at Yerevan № 77 Basic School named after Ruben Miroyan.

In 2001-2006 he studied at Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction at the Faculty of Construction Technologies, earning the profession of architect-economist.

In 2008-2010 he studied political science at the Department of Politology (Political Governance and Political Analysis) at the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia, receiving a Master’s degree in Political Science.

In 2011-2014 in the same academy as an applicant he was engaged in scientific research on “Problems of Modernization of National Interests of the Republic of Armenia”.

Scientific activity

In 2014, Simonyan defended his PhD thesis, receiving the degree PhD in political science.

Since 2015 and to this day, in parallel with his work, Gurgen Simonyan has been teaching at various universities and educational centers in Armenia.

2016-2018 at the Command base faculty of the Military University named after V. Sargsyan, 2016-2018 at the branch of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in Yerevan, 2018-2019 at the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia, 2022-2024 at the Yerevan Gladzor University.

Since 2015, Gurgen Simonyan has been lecturing at the International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University, and since 2022 – at the “Mkhitaryan” Educational Complex.

Simonian has lectured many times at various informal educational events.

Gurgen Simonyan is the author of more than twenty scientific articles published in domestic and foreign scientific journals.

Professional activities

Simonyan’s professional experience was realized in various institutions.

Gurgen Simonyan worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Law (IPSL) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of the Republic of Armenia from 2015 to 2024.

From 2019 to 2021, Simonyan worked as a scientist-analyst at the Military Strategic Studies Center of the Institute for National Strategic Studies (INSS) of the National Defense Research University (NDRU) of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia.

Since 2015, Simonyan has been working at the International Scientific-Educational Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Military service

From 2006 to 2008, Simonyan served in the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia.

In 2018, after ten days of military training, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the Reserve.

During the 44-day war of 2020, Gurgen Simonyan volunteered for the Armenian army from the very first days. As part of the N Regiment of the RA Armed Forces, as a commander of an engineer-sapper platoon, Simonyan took part in combat operations. After the end of martial law, he was demobilized to the reserves.

He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant in the Reserve in 2022 after a seven-day training exercise

Public service

2019-2020 Simonyan was elected Chairman of the International Integration Subcommittee of the Religion, Diaspora and International Integration Committee of the Public Council of the Republic of Armenia.

Since 2018, Simonyan has been appearing as a political analyst in the public media space, building his analytics on the basis of academic science, which has won his the sympathy and trust of an audience of thousands.

On May 28, 2024, the momentous day of the “Republic”, Gurgen Simonyan announced his entry into politics, initiating the formation of a new, alternative political power.

Passions

Painting

Since his pre-school years, Simonyan has loved to draw, and the source of inspiration for him has been the library and albums with works by different artists accumulated by the adult members of the family, as well as the abundance of reproductions of world masterpieces by great artists hanging on the walls of the house. He enjoys painting still lifes, flora and fauna of nature, as well as portraits. Having no special education, his own style of drawing was greatly influenced by the advice of famous artists and art figures. The most memorable was a meeting with Henrik Igityan. Simonyan still cherishes a gift signed by Igityan. Sport

For more than ten years Simonyan thoroughly studied various types of martial arts: full contact, sendo-ryu karate-do, french boxing (savate) and kido-ryu.

Armenian National Sendo-ryu Karate-Do Federation awards Gurgen Simonyan, who took the I (first) place in the absolute weight category among boys 15-17 years old at the open competitions dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the founding of the style in the world.

Gurgen Simonyan is awarded for taking an honorable place in the second open competition of the “Gog-Gosh” club of the French boxing martial art “Savate”. 2001 y.

Awards and Honor Certificates

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Armenian Army, Gurgen Simonyan was awarded the “Nelson Stepanyan” medal of the RA Armed Forces.

In 2022, he received a letter of commendation from a military commander for his strong performance in a seven-day exercise.
